PSA: How to Repair Cracks in Marbles

by admin in Tips and Tricks

Marbles can add a touch of elegance to any room. With a crack in the marble, however, the elegance is diminished, as the crack may be the only thing you notice about the table until it’s repaired. A two-part epoxy or a repair adhesive designed to work on stone mends a crack on any color of marble; make sure the adhesive is clear so it isn’t noticeable.

1. Preparation Is Key. Basic prep work is required before applying epoxy to the crack. Clean the cracked area by rubbing it with a nylon bristled brush to remove loose marble particles; if there are a lot of particles, catch them on newspaper and save them for the epoxy. Wipe acetone along the crack to clean the area and make it more receptive to epoxy.
2. Marble Powder. Marble powder from the same type of marble helps mask the repair. This powder is available from some shops that sell marble monuments. Mix equal parts marble powder and the epoxy or adhesive in a small container, then brush the mixture over the crack with an artist’s brush in one thin layer, or use the brush to drizzle the solution over the damage, allowing it to seep into the depths of the crack. Once dry, sand the area gently along the direction of the crack using a very fine sandpaper.
